‘Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse’ promises an epic conclusion

Of the many big screen versions of Spider-Man this century, the Spider-Verse movies are easily the most ambitious and creatively rich. Both Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse and its sequel, Across The Spider-Verse, take the core of Marvel’s web-slinger and blow it out across a multi-dimensional fiesta – where anthropomorphic pigs are just as worthy of the Spidey suit as punk rock enthusiasts and hard-boiled noir heroes voiced by Nicolas Cage.

Beyond the dazzling hybrid of animation styles, Spider-Verse has cemented Miles Morales as Peter Parker’s equal in the cultural landscape. The trilogy is set to conclude with Beyond The Spider-Verse, but can it round off what has been, so far, the perfect swing?

Is Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse actually happening?

The end is official

After the success of Into The Spider-Verse, two sequels were officially announced in 2021. The first, Across The Spider-Verse, was billed as part one of the sequel’s story. The second part was then renamed to Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse in April 2022.

The film is set to pick up directly after events in Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, which ended on a cliffhanger as Miles Morales is confronted with a villainous version of himself in the Earth-42 dimension. Gwen Stacy assembles a team to find Miles, consisting of Spider-Man Noir, Spider-Ham, Peni Parker and many others.

When is Beyond The Spider-Verse coming out?

It’s up in the air

Beyond The Spider-Verse was originally slated to release in March 2024, but it was delayed due to the actors and writers’ strikes in Hollywood last year. At the time of writing, the film doesn’t have a concrete release date.

There are rumblings that we’ll have to wait until 2025. On TikTok in April 2024, musician D4vd teased his involvement in the film’s soundtrack, with the caption: “See you next year when spiderman comes out.” It isn’t official confirmation, but it’s an indication at least.

What have the creators said about the sequel?

Get ready for more Spider-Punk

Producers Chris Miller and Phil Lord confirmed they were in production on Beyond The Spider-Verse back in December 2013, a month after the Hollywood strikes came to an end.

“We’re in production on it,” Miller said. “We’re really excited about where the story is going and I think it’s a very satisfying conclusion to the trilogy. It’s somehow as emotional as the other ones, and I think it’s going to be really exciting. We’re knee deep in it.”

Shameik Moore, who voices Miles Morales, also gave a very vague overview of the sequel during an interview with ScreenRant. When asked what people can expect from the third film, Moore said: “Action… you can expect Miles and Gwen. You can expect everything you’re expecting [from] the continuation from the second one.

“You can expect to see The Spot; you can expect some action-packed energy and some dilemmas and problems to solve.”

During Deadline’s Crew Call podcast, Phil Lord and Chris Miller confirmed multiple variants of Gwen Stacy will make an appearance in Beyond The Spider-Verse. “It’s on the page,” Lord said. “There’s one I’m very excited about.”

The next film will also see a visit to Spider-Punk’s dimension. “Visiting Spider-Punk’s world is one of the many crazy mixed media adventures that we’re going to have in the next one,” Miller said on the podcast. “It will be a wholly new feast for the eyes.”

Wait, is a spin-off in the works?

Spider-Gwen might be taking the lead

An untitled all-female spin-off, presumably led by Spider-Gwen, was reported to be in the works way back in 2018.

While news on the project has been relatively quiet since, producer Amy Pascal said the spin-off was still in the works in May 2023. In an interview with Variety, co-producer Avi Arad said audiences will see a “Spider-Woman” movie “sooner than you expect”. There is, however, no current release date.
